Meet Shrewsbury’s Class of ’22!

20 June, 2022 by Expat Living 4 Min Read

Graduating primary students from Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong (together with their mums!) discuss their experiences at the school – and what the future in secondary school might hold.

Primary Education

Offering a bespoke programme of study to students between the ages of three and 11, the team at Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong know a thing or two about primary education and the journey of successful graduation.

Students of the 2022 cohort will be finishing up at Shrewsbury in June 2022. Ahead lies a well-deserved break, before they begin the next phase of their learning journey in some of the leading secondary schools in Hong Kong and the region. Here, three families from the Class of 2022 reflect on their time at primary school.

Akshadha

Akshadha joined Shrewsbury in 2019 as a Year 4 student. “We had lots of options available to us,” explains her mum, “but the care, attention and commitment towards the experiences of primary-aged children at Shrewsbury is undoubtedly unique. Our daughter is seen and known – the Principal welcomes her to school personally each morning and greets everyone by name. She has made exceptional academic progress and has become more confident and independent as a result.”

Akshadha also talks glowingly about her school experience, highlighting the library as among her favourite spots to visit on the campus. “I love to read,” she says, “and I will miss my teachers enormously when I graduate in the summer, but I know that I have been well prepared. I look forward to visiting again in the future to share my experiences with other Shrewsbury students.”

Nathaniel

Nathaniel joined Shrewbury as part of the same cohort as Akshada, and he speaks with ambition and purpose about his time. “My favourite subject is Chinese,” he shares. “I love the challenge, and I found the Dynasty study undertaken this year particularly fascinating.”

“Shrewsbury students enjoy an incredible range of opportunities,” highlights Nathaniel’s mum. “The facilities on campus are unrivalled, but it’s the quality of the shared relationships that makes Shrewsbury really stand out. The staff are incredibly attentive, and the services at every level are so well personalised. My son is thriving amongst a group of children and adults who care deeply about his success and his wellbeing.”

Andrea

Andrea joined at Shewsbury’s point of foundation in 2018; since then, she has seen the school grow and change over time, but one thing, she argues, has remained unerringly consistent. “Everyone at Shrewsbury is ambitious – they want to work hard, they want to do well and they want the best for one another,” she explains, “I have always felt cared for, looked after and inspired here”.

“Andrea has enjoyed a broad collection of academic, musical and sporting opportunities at Shrewsbury,” adds her mum. “But the commitment of the team runs far deeper than that. Shrewsbury students are guided and supported personally. Our daughter shares a rich and varied range of positive relationships and will treasure her primary years forever.”

The graduation process

Secondary school selection at Shrewsbury is guided by a designated School Partnership Coordinator; this stands as one of the key advantages highlighted at the point of enrolment. Drawing upon a shared and growing knowledge of each child’s academic and social profile, the Shrewsbury team delivers individualised support over the course of a student’s final three years at the school.

“The process of choosing a secondary school seemed daunting at first,” Akshadha’s mum explains, “but we were so well guided.” Nathaniel’s mum agrees: “We attended a range of informative presentations and gained so much from the experience and expertise available to us.” “We will be terribly sad to leave,” says Andrea’s mum in conclusion, “but we know that we’ve been exceptionally well prepared for everything yet to come.”

A word from the school

“Akshadha, Nathaniel and Andrea will graduate in June alongside all the other members of the Class of 2022, and we wish them all the very best in their future endeavours, through Shrewsbury and beyond!
