The Store House won gold for a second consecutive year in our Expat Living Readers’ Choice Awards 2024. We chat with the company’s CEO, HELEN NG, about what they offer, how to choose a storage facility for rent, and tips on selecting the self storage in Hong Kong for you.
Tell us a little about yourself and your career path.
I’ve always been in the real estate industry. Before becoming the CEO of Lock+Store Singapore and Malaysia, and The Store House Hong Kong, I developed private residential, commercial and hotel properties.
Since 2016, I’ve served as the Chair of the Self Storage Association Asia (SSAA). As the only female board member in a male-dominated industry, I’m grateful for the support of my fellow board members.
When looking at getting storage in Hong Kong, what are some key factors people should consider?
Location and price are important considerations, as is the quality of the facility in terms of adequate lighting and cleanliness. Security is paramount, too – the facility should offer 24/7 CCTV monitoring and secure access.
What separates self-storage from warehousing is convenient 24/7 access, flexible storage terms, climate-controlled units, onsite customer service, free parking and free use of trolleys and ladders.
How do you choose the right storage size at The Store House to fit your needs?
You can use our online size estimator (thestorehouse.com.hk/hk-en/size-calculator), though nothing beats coming down and meeting our friendly storage specialists and viewing the units in person.
What about furniture storage in Hong Kong for those who are in-between homes or relocating?
The Store House offers the perfect solution in these situations because of our flexible storage terms – from one month to one year (renewable). We also have an existing tie-up with GoGoX, which ensures a hasslefree transition from home to storage unit and vice versa.
Ecommerce businesses are on the rise; how can your facilities assist these startups?
We have a number of startups storing with us. Our flexible storage terms allow them to scale their storage unit sizes and storage duration according to their business needs. We also offer a goods drop-off and pick-up service at The Store House Western District at Sai Wan.
What’s one key tip for someone who is just starting to look into storage facilities in Hong Kong?
Always choose an operator who is a member of the SSAA. Look for the organisation’s latest decal displayed at their facilities or verify their membership in the online directory (selfstorageasia.org/all-directories). SSAA members comply with stringent fire safety regulations and uphold high standards of customer service and public safety.
Finally, tell us about your partnership with Hong Kong Dog Rescue. Why is this important to you?
We are recognised by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service as a Caring Company, and we value giving back to the community. Many of our staff are dog lovers and have adopted dogs, so partnering with HKDR felt like a perfect fit. HKDR is a no-kill shelter that cares for over 600 rescue dogs in Hong Kong, and they need all the support they can get.
Keychain cuties!
As part of its fundraising efforts, The Store House is selling limited-edition dog keychain bags. You can purchase them for $100 each from its Western District facility seven days a week, 9am to 6pm daily (thestorehouse.com.hk/hk-en/saiwan-mini-storage) or from HKDR shelters (hongkongdogrescue.com).
