A warm Easter Monday called for a jaunt on the DB Ferry for a relaxing family lunch at new Discovery Bay restaurant, Figos. Our restaurant table had a lovely uninterrupted view of the neighbourhood beach thanks to its location on D’Deck and, as with any Castelo Concepts restaurant venue, you’re always guaranteed a warm welcome and a cold drink on arrival. In fact, Matt and his friendly team took great care of us all afternoon.
With a nicely chilled bottle of rosé for the grown-ups and a smooth and creamy mango smoothie for daughter Sophia, we began to peruse the menu of this Hong Kong neighbourhood eatery. Looking around the other tables in the Discovery Bay restaurant, we could see families tucking into juicy burgers, thin-crust pizzas and platters of crispy loaded nachos.
We opted for the Pop Corn Chicken ($90), which arrived in a small metal bucket. Sophia went first and she thought the chicken was moist with a crispy peppery coating; she was right on the money. There was ketchup on the side for kids and a cheeky chilli salsa with plenty of kick for us – a perfect family sharing starter. We also chose the tapas “plank” ($165) and while the prosciutto and salami were quite good on their own, the accompanying roasted whole head of garlic took them up another notch.
Knowing all portions at this Discovery Bay restaurant would be generous, we thought we’d save the other starters that caught our eye for next time; sizzling garlic prawns with spicy chorizo ($145) and deep fried camembert ($115).
Sophia was impressed with the Kids’ Menu ($60 including a scoop of ice cream). Her eyes lit up when her spaghetti carbonara came, and she loved the soft tasty ham and wonderfully cheesy sauce.
The grilled salmon steak with crisp chilli ($195) promised Thai-style fireworks and it did the trick: plump and moist salmon with a superb crispy skin. For all the ravenous dads and kids coming in from Sunday morning rugby for the DB Pirates, a huge full rack of pork spare ribs ($225) smothered in barbecue sauce is just the ticket!
With very little room left, we shared the lovely Figos tiramisu ($70) and headed off for a reviving stroll along Discovery Bay beach. From start to finish the service was excellent and the food generous yet creatively presented. The lucky people of Discovery Bay will be very well taken care of by Matt and his wonderful team. We will most definitely be back.
