Teens and technology: Negative effects of too much screen time

Dr Quratulain Zaidi of MindNLife discusses an ever-increasing problem among young people today.

I was recently asked to talk to teenagers about the use and misuse of technology, and the impact that too much screen time might be having on them. One question I posed was this: โ€œIn one hour, how much time do you spend working on your device, and what do you do for the rest of that time?โ€

They were very honest about their use of time on screen, and these figures are unlikely to come as a surprise to you: on average, teens spend 10 to 15 minutes doing schoolwork โ€“ the rest is spent on social media, chatting or gaming.

Not only is social media distracting these teens and impacting their learning, it is destructive for them emotionally. How many friendships go sour as a result of misunderstandings in text messages? Itโ€™s been said that only 7 percent of communication is about the words used; 93 percent of it is how you say the message โ€“ the nuances in tonality and body language that are missing from a written text message. Then thereโ€™s the complexity of omitting punctuation, which can lead to further ambiguity and misunderstanding. Studies show that emotions can be communicated much more accurately and effectively when we are face to face and able to see each otherโ€™s body language.

Teens are constantly distracted by the need to be up to date with whatโ€™s going on on social media; how popular they are is measured by how many โ€œlikesโ€ they get on their status and who comments on their posts. Theyโ€™re also under immense pressure to get instant replies from their peers; if they donโ€™t, these kinds of thoughts can arise:

โ€ข โ€œMy friend is upset with me.โ€

โ€ข โ€œDid I do something wrong?โ€

โ€ข โ€œThey hate me!โ€

And it gets even deeper than that when they start thinking:

โ€ข โ€œLet me check when they were last online.โ€

โ€ข โ€œOh my god, theyโ€™ve been ignoring me while chatting to others!โ€

โ€ข โ€œIโ€™ll send a WhatsApp message to our other friend to ask if theyโ€™ve said anything about being upset with me.โ€

Another question I posed to the group of teens when I addressed them was this: โ€œWhy not just pick up the phone to ask for clarification?โ€ Their answers were along these lines:

โ€ข โ€œI donโ€™t want to come across as needyโ€

โ€ข โ€œThat would be so uncool!โ€

โ€ข โ€œYou do not call and clarify.โ€

Why are teens so attracted to these forums? Why do they spend so much time there when it can be so detrimental to them? In short, social media gives them a false sense of community, and in their stage of development, teens are looking for groups to identify with โ€“ they want what gives them the sense of freedom where they can share their deepest darkest secrets within the community. This often has unhelpful consequences. Studies show that almost 40 percent of internet users between 18 and 35 years of age have regretted posting personal information about themselves at some point.

So how should we behave online? One way is to ask these questions before you press the โ€œSendโ€ or โ€œPostโ€ button:

โ€ข Am I okay with everyone seeing this?

โ€ข Does it actually represent what I mean to communicate?

โ€ข Is it offensive?

โ€ข Am I reacting to something someone has said, and do I want to make my reaction public?

โ€ข Is this really something I want to share, or is it just me venting?

โ€ข Is this an appropriate forum to emotionally dump on?

If there does happen to be a miscommunication, pick up the phone to call and clarify the issue privately, instead of getting the whole online community involved.

What about parents? What can they do to help? I recently read an article saying that we need to do five key things every day to improve our mental wellbeing: connect with others, be active, be curious, keep learning and give to others. A good conversation delivers all five, which is as good for our mental health as five portions of fruit and vegetables a day are for our physical health. Teach your children effective communication by engaging in conversation with them. Support them and talk to them so they can learn the art of conversation; once learnt, this skill is invaluable.

Easy Blueberry Oreo Cheesecake to start the weekend!
Serves 4, or 2 if you're hungry๐Ÿ˜‰

Preparation time: 15 mins Ingredients:
โ€ข 6 digestive biscuits
โ€ข 50g butter 
โ€ข 250g cream cheese (1 brick) 
โ€ข 6 Oreo biscuits
โ€ข 125g blueberries (1 box)
โ€ข 100g milk or whipped cream 
โ€ข 5 tablespoons sugar

Instructions:
For crust:
1. Crush digestive biscuits in a big bowl and add melted butter.
2. Press together at the base of the cake mould.
3. Set aside to cool.

For filling: 
1. Beat cream cheese, sugar and milk or whipped cream on medium speed in a bowl until it is smooth and creamy. 
2. Add crushed Oreos and beat until they mix evenly. 
3. Pour the filling over the cooled crust.
4. Freeze for two hours and top with blueberries!๐Ÿซ

Recipe: Flourless Pecan Cranberry Brownie

Ingredients

Brownie base:

2 servings of Nuzest Clean Lean Chocolate Protein
1.5 cup of pumpkin puree
1 cup of hazelnut butter or almond *
1/2 cup of raw dark cacao powder
1/2 cup of chopped pecans
1/3 cup of dehydrated cranberries
2 teaspoons of Manuka honey ** Optional
White chocolate drizzle:

1/3 cup of melted cacao butter
2 tablespoons of cashew nut butter
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1-2 teaspoons of Erythritol
Dark chocolate drizzle:

1/3 cup of melted cacao butter
2 tablespoons of cashew nut butter
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
3 tablespoons of raw dark cacao powder
1 teaspoon of Erythritol
Instructions

Brownie base:

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
Grease a square baking tray with coconut oil and line tray with parchment paper.
In a large blender, mix all the brownie ingredients together until smooth.
Pour the brownie mix into the pan and bake in the oven for 20 minutes.
Once cooked, allow the brownies to cool on a rack.
Chocolate drizzle:

You will need two separate mixing bowls for the white and dark chocolate drizzle.
Melt the cacao butter at low temperature and mix with the rest of the ingredients.
Pour the chocolate drizzle over the cooled brownies.
Pop them in the fridge to set or enjoy them as warm brownies.**
Optional: Sprinkle some fresh pomegranate and dried cranberry seeds onto the brownies (after cooling in the fridge for 20 minutes).

Recipe: Persimmon Vanilla Chia Porridge

Serves 2

Ingredients

PERSIMMON-VANILLA-CHAI-PORRIDGE.jpg
Chia Vanilla Milky Layer:

1/2 cup of chia Seeds
1.5 cup of coconut milk
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2 servings of Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Vanilla 
1 tablespoon of tahini paste
2 Medjool dates
2 slices of fresh persimmon
Persimmon Coconut Porridge Layer:

1 whole persimmon chopped
1/2 cup of coconut yoghurt
2 tablespoons of coconut flakes
1 teaspoon of almond butter
Instructions

Chia Vanilla Milky Layer:

Blend all the ingredients together apart from the chia seeds.
Once the mix is well blended, add the chia seeds and mix well. Place in a glass jar and leave overnight in the fridge.
Persimmon Coconut Porridge Layer:

Blend all the ingredients together until creamy and smooth. Place in a glass jar, leave overnight in the fridge.
The next morning you can enjoy your porridge by layering your chia porridge with the persimmon porridge.
Optional: Add in between crunchy texture by sprinkling some raw buckwheat groats already activated or quinoa puffs
