April to October is swimming season in Hong Kong, which hopefully means plenty of fun in the sun around a pool! If you’re a swimming pool owner in Hong Kong, you’ll likely know of PoolHK.com, a provider of pool cleaners and accessories for keeping pools in tip-top shape. We chat with its founder, long-term French expat Guillaume Leullier, and get a deep dive (pardon the pun!) on the business.
Where are you from, when did you come to Hong Kong, and what brought you here?
I was born and grew up in France, but I’ve spent more than two decades working in Hong Kong in multiple different fields. Initially, a job offer brought me here after graduation. Today, I’m happy to call Hong Kong my home.
When did you launch PoolHK.com and why?
The idea for PoolHK.com emerged at the beginning of the pandemic, around April 2020, when everybody was in lockdown and stuck in their homes. Many people, including me, were forced to spend their holidays at home and needed to think of activities for their kids – and swimming pools became very popular. But how do you maintain a clean pool with many kids playing around and bringing in sand or dirt after walking around the pool? That’s why PoolHK.com was created.
How has the business grown and what are your key products? Are some for smaller pools or even spas?
We started in Hong Kong and quickly grew to operate around Southeast Asia. Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand are now among our leading markets. All of our products come exclusively from Kokido, the market leader for more than 30 years.
Take a look at the video descriptions of all of our products and see what’s most suitable for your needs. It might be a fully automated robot for your pool or just a small handheld vacuum for your Jacuzzi. PoolHK.com is one-stop pool cleaner and appliances shop, meaning you’ll find the right device for your pool, whether it’s a traditional swimming pool or an above-ground pool, a spa or a kiddies’ pool – we even have some accessories for cleaning your fish pond!
What’s the latest in pool-cleaning technology?
We regularly provide new technological concepts and products. I would say the most innovative product right now is the Voltera 105, a device with multiple functions and three filtration systems of up to 50 microns; it makes it much easier to clean your pool because the Voltera 105 catches all the fine particles.
Is Hong Kong a hard place for keeping a pool clean?
Hong Kong is warm for much of the year, especially during summer. Keeping good maintenance of your pool will help to avoid the development of algae. Algae can be a nightmare for a new swimming pool owner.
On our blog, we provide guidelines and tips to get rid of algae. In short, you must keep the chlorine and pH level at a certain level to ensure no microorganisms can sustain algae.
What’s the biggest mistake pool owners make when it comes to upkeep?
Thinking that the pump and filter system will be enough to maintain a healthy pool. This might be correct if you’re never really using the pool, but if you have kids playing in it all day, I can guarantee you that the bottom of your pool will have lots of sand, tiny bits of gravel and more. Without the kinds of devices offered at PoolHK.com, good luck taking all of that out! And, removing all the water from a pool just to clean it is against our core values; that water should be cherished and preserved!
Where is the most amazing pool you have swum in (or would like to swim in)?
I love to swim and I do so around four times a week, in a pool or open water – anywhere I can. Now I’m looking forward to my next dream swimming spot, which is Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia.
