Originally from Sri Lanka, RAJI and her husband have lived here for 19 years. After a long and satisfying career as a lingerie designer, she took the plunge and launched a Hong Kong jewellery brand, Kama by Raji. If you love coloured gemstones, this is the designer for you!
Creating a jewellery brand
I decided I wanted to create something I was passionate about – and something that allowed me to bring Sri Lanka to the international market. Sri Lanka is abundant in natural gemstones and has a community of master craftsmen trained through generations in handmade jewellery. As a designer, I’m bringing these two attributes together, by creating wearable art.
Tell us about the coloured gemstones you use.
The gemstones I use are mostly sourced and cut in Sri Lanka. Kama by Raji is a celebration of coloured natural gemstones, and we use the best quality, cut and colour in our creations. Each of my creations is designed to suit the specific gemstone; I usually use rough stones and have them custom cut to suit the design.
While trends in jewellery aren’t as obvious as in clothing, I do feel that there’s a lot more interest in coloured gemstones than a few years ago. People are boldly moving away from diamonds and embracing beautiful aquamarines and stunning tourmalines!
I love every piece I design for my jewellery brand. If I absolutely had to pick a favourite, I would say my statement solitaire aquamarine ring and my 3D lotus petal drop earrings in green amethyst.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Outside of work, I love painting and have sold a few pieces of acrylic on canvas. So in my free time I enjoy visiting art supplies stores. I also love exploring new restaurants and going back to the ones I love!
