Thinning hair or hair loss can happen after childbirth, a period of high stress, illness and ageing. Luckily, Glow Spa & Salon in Central has found a way to bring your locks back using one of the best hair growth serums for women.
The salon’s visiting trichologist Andrea Clarke is a specialist in hair and scalp issues. She has been assisting Glow clients with their hair loss and scalp concerns for the past five years. The hair support team has also expanded with the addition of Senior stylists Sarahann McGill and Fei Ho (with over 20 years of experience each) and colourist Chrissie Lo. They work alongside Andrea to help look after clients’ hair and scalp concerns, including delivering Glow’s in-salon treatment, Calecim.
How the hair growth serum for women works
The Calecim Advanced Hair System is a hair restoration programme that treats symptoms of shedding and thinning. It consists of a six-to-twelve week intensive treatment that combines microneedling with a stem cell-derived serum to supercharge and activate hair follicles. Additionally, a maintenance programme that keeps the hair follicles healthy and active.
Why is this one of the best hair growth serums? For one thing, it’s the result of years of scientific research and innovation by Calecim’s parent company. This cell research corporation is dedicated to developing life-saving technology in a variety of applications such as neurodegenerative conditions, wound healing and autoimmune conditions.
The primary ingredient of the Advanced Hair System is PPT-6, a proprietary formula that includes stem-cell-derived exosomes, growth factors and cytokines. This ingredient complex is made from ethically and sustainably sourced stem cells that stimulate hair follicles to promote new growth and reduce hair shedding. The hair growth serum works by signalling the cells, instructing the follicles to stimulate hair production and “behave in a younger manner”.
According to Calecim, clinical observations have shown a 30 times reduction in hair follicle inflammation, which is the key cause of hair loss. They’ve also shown a 14 percent increase in the number of individual hairs on the scalp, a 16 percent increase in hair shaft thickness, and a 15 percent increase in the number of follicles per square centimetre of scalp.
Calecim says that while its hair growth serum and microneedling treatment cannot affect genetics, hormones or lifestyle choices, for those suffering from hair loss from many of the previously mentioned factors, Calecim works to stimulate the follicles to slow down hair fall and stimulate hair growth in once-dormant follicles. With ongoing use, it will keep the new hair looking and growing strong and healthy. As many as 95 percent of clients see results within six weeks, with no reported adverse side-effects.
Choosing a Calecim treatment
The Calecim treatment at Glow takes between 45 and 60 minutes and includes:
- Consultation
- Wash and cleanse
- Hair growth serum application
- Blow-dry
You can couple it with another (non-chemical) service in the salon. This means you can also get a haircut in the same session, or you can have it done after a treatment in the spa, like waxing or a facial. While Glow recommends booking appointments with Sarahann, Chrissie or Fei for a course of Calecim, it’s also available as a set of six take-home treatments, using a derma stamp microneedling device for home use.
Calecim will be available at Glow from the beginning of September 2024. A box of six treatments for home use retails for approximately $3,000. The in-salon treatments will be slightly more expensive. However, the Glow team recommends including in-salon therapies, especially for the first few applications, to maximise results.
The Glow team also suggests that you plan for a 12-week course plus maintenance. However, most will see results within six weeks.
What are some common hair loss causes?
The Glow team outlines seven factors that can cause or accelerate hair thinning:
- Diet
- Stress and traumas
- Illness (e.g., COVID-19, thyroid conditions, high blood pressure, insulin resistance)
- Some medications and medical treatments (e.g., thyroid medication, steroids or chemotherapy)
- Post-pregnancy and menopause
- Hormone therapies, including birth control
- Traction alopecia and scalp injuries such as scarring or burns
