JEROME BARTY-TAYLOR of Hong Kong-based education consultancy BartyED answers some of the key questions about how to apply for US colleges successfully. We also discuss when international students should start considering an American university and how they are helping students heading to Harvard University, MIT, Yale, UPenn and NYU.
When is the best time to apply for US colleges?
Careful preparation lies at the heart of a successful US college application. The last few application cycles have become even more challenging for international students, which is why it’s really important to plan the process.
For students targeting entry to the top US colleges and universities, I recommend starting to think about the process as early as Grade 8 or 9. At this stage, it’s about ensuring that students’ academics are on track as well as developing their profiles appropriately through extracurricular activities. There’s often a misconception amongst parents that by just adding more activities to their child’s schedule, this will bring success. While top colleges certainly value breadth, they want students who are passionate about their chosen fields. Hence, in Grade 9 and 10, it’s important for students to seek out internships and research opportunities, and develop independent passion projects that substantiate their interests.
Playing on a few school sports teams will not suffice. It is also very important that students apply for Early Decision where possible, as it greatly increases the chances of admission.
Are standardised tests optional?
Many colleges and universities implemented test-optional policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, I insist that international candidates we are supporting to target top US schools still present with a high SAT or ACT score; it’s a very useful metric for college admissions teams who are seeking to evaluate candidates especially when Hong Kong students follow such a diverse range of curricula.
I normally recommend students to complete their first sitting in Grade 10, but it depends on their readiness and if they are targeting the most competitive schools. Given the importance of the Grade 11 transcript and predicted grades for students completing IBDP, standardised test preparation must not impede students’ attainment; it’s best to get it out of the way as soon as possible.
Interestingly, a number of schools have now indicated that they will officially reverse this test- optional policy in subsequent admission cycles. In this sense, the writing is on the wall and students must still aim for a strong showing on the SAT or the ACT. There’s no particular advantage to one test over the other – both are equally accepted.
What about the American unviversity admissions essays?
Students typically submit the Common App essay to the majority of their target schools, as well as a series of college-specific supplemental responses. In the Common App, colleges are looking for a mature and reflective narrative that draws on students’ unique experiences. Most students struggle with this style of writing, particularly the necessary sophistication of voice. Getting students to read regularly and improve their literacy is thus a crucial component of BartyED’s admissions programs. Candidates must not underestimate the significance of supplemental responses. When you have only 200 words to explain how your life experiences will allow you to contribute to the Harvard University community, there’s no room for vague trivialities.
How can BartyED help you apply to an American University?
We provide a comprehensive, customised admissions service for Grade 9 to 12 students who are targeting top US colleges and universities. Our consultants work with a select group of students each year to ensure they receive individualised support on their admissions journey. The process can also be a stressful time for families as teenagers begin to envisage and plan the next stage of their lives; I always make myself available to our students and parents, even those I am not supporting personally, to help mediate the process as needed.
In 2024, we have students heading to Harvard University, MIT, Yale, UPenn and NYU to name a few; I can’t wait to see what they achieve next.
