Curious how bespoke furnishings and décor tailored uniquely for you could elevate your personal oasis? Here, interior designer EMMA HURLSTON-TSENG shows us some of the ways she uses customised furniture in small bedroom design ideas, full renovations and rental projects.
#1 Master and kids’ bedrooms
This was a full home renovation. The master bedroom features lighting from UK brand Pooky with brass fittings and hand marbled shades. Bespoke bedside cabinets and blue velvet cushions tie in the colour and add texture and warmth. I also maximised the room’s built-in wardrobe wall at the end of the bed to ensure easier ergonomic access with strategically placed drawers.
The kids’ room had a small footprint but a high ceiling. So I worked with my contractors to max this out, designing a raised bed with storage, and a study desk utilising the space over the windowsill. There was even space for a bean bag reading/ chill-out zone underneath.
#2 Small bedroom design ideas for a teen
A teenager’s room was renovated in a client’s home with custom-designed built-in furniture. This included a storage bed, lots of cupboards and display areas, and a flip-down desk. Not a centimetre was wasted, but with clever use of colour and materials it still looks light and airy.
#3 Customised furniture for a rental home
I often have customised furniture and bespoke pieces made for my clients’ bedrooms. I also work closely with the furniture makers on design and colour. In this rental home’s master bedroom I designed a beautiful dresser with a practical glass top in a smoky grey green, with a matching pair of nightstands.
#4 Guest bedroom design ideas
In this guest bedroom, the oak, rattan and brass drawers serve to unite the twin beds, whilst adding texture and convenient storage, while the large-scale Indigo Living lamp was the perfect complement.
#5 Scandinavian furniture
In this full renovation of a luxury apartment in Happy Valley, it was an absolute delight to work with the clients’ authentic Scandinavian designer furniture. I had a beautiful scalloped rug made by Jennifer Manners in the UK, to which lamps were added from the design house GUBI. A bespoke cushion echoes the headboard design and ties the scheme together.
#6 Matching bedroom design ideas
Cushions were again used to good effect in this rental property. A bespoke ottoman and matching cushion in the master bedroom reflect the sea and sky. In the guest room, fresh and graphic cushions on both the bed and rattan chair make for a pulled together and welcoming impression.
