Wondering where to buy fabrics in Hong Kong for cushions, sofas or curtains? Dressing your windows, or changing the soft furnishings in your home can transform the feel of the whole space. The team from Altfield Interiors fills us in on their range of high-performance indoor/outdoor fabrics.
What are high-performance indoor/outdoor fabrics?
They’re essentially very durable fabrics that are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, offering value-added qualities such as high abrasion resistance, lightfastness and colourfastness, water- and stain-resistance, and even anti-bacterial and anti-mould properties.
How can they be used to great effect in a home?
These fabrics combine form with function. They’re available in a huge variety of colourways, textures and patterns in stylish designs, and also offer fantastic properties that make them especially suitable for homes with outdoor areas, or families with young children or pets. For example, they’re popular for curtains in windows that are exposed to lots of sunlight, as well as for heavily used sofas and cushions.
What fabric buying trends are you seeing for 2023?
We’re continuing to see an increased preference for colourful shades and textured fabrics and trimmings. Moreover, the technology used to produce these items has advanced considerably; a fabric can look and feel like a regular material for indoors yet also be used outdoors. A lot of our clients are surprised when they discover a seemingly regular fabric is a high-performance product for both areas of a home.
What are some tips for picking the right fabric for Hong Kong?
Consider your lifestyle for starters. How will the fabric be used? If it’s for a sofa for a family home with pets in Sai Kung, definitely go for a high-performance indoor/outdoor fabric. Once we’ve narrowed down the category, we can start the selection process from the client’s preferred colour palette, texture or pattern.
What are some of your favourites among these durable fabrics in the Altfield Showroom?
We’re currently loving the new collections from Gaston y Daniela, Manuel Canovas, and Samuel & Sons. Gaston y Daniela’s Gran Khan Collection, for example, offers fun and vibrant fabrics created using technology that enables the patterns to be digitally printed on 100 percent recycled cotton. These are perfect for outdoor use in extreme conditions; they satisfy a range of endurance tests, from rubbing and pilling, to lightfastness and water-repellence, and they’re anti-bacterial and anti-mould.
Samuel & Sons’ latest Aspen Trimmings range, meanwhile, is a plush, seasonally inspired textural collection of high-performance trimmings woven from 100 percent solution-dyed acrylic yarns. By combining different yarn qualities, the natural patterns of Aspen are translated into a series of borders, cords and fringes with captivating tactile and visual richness.
