Among the things that Hong Kong does brilliantly well are bustling city markets and scenic hiking trails. Sitting pretty just a short walk from each of these contrasting environments is GARDENEast Serviced Apartments in Wan Chai. If you need a place to stay between leases or you’re moving to Hong Kong to live or for a stint of work, this property in the heart of Wan Chai is ideally placed for urban adventures and nature escapes alike.
About these serviced apartments in Wan Chai
The 216 immaculately furnished units across 28 floors include studios, one-bedders and executive suites. I gave one of the latter a whirl for a weekend recently and found it a generous and comfortable space – queen bed, bathroom, separate living area with large sofa and dining table, private balcony, washer-dryer and more.
There was a fully equipped open-plan kitchen, too, with absolutely everything you might need to prepare a feast. But I saved my eating for the neighbourhood downstairs – from roasted meats at popular Chukfo Taipan in the middle of Wan Chai Market, to tasty tacos at newly opened El Taquero. Both were just a couple of minutes away by foot. And you don’t even need to go as far – the restaurants and cafés start right on the property’s doorstep.
Services and facilities
My stay overlapped with the tail end of Typhoon Saola, and as much Signal 10 fury as the storm could muster, the friendly team at GARDENEast remained cool, calm and collected. They were super quick to update signage during the weather event, and to help with any specific requests. This building has great bones, too; as I kept busy with work projects in my room, I barely registered the thrashing wind and rain outside – and the free super-fast Wi-Fi didn’t skip a beat.
Among the facilities is a classy-looking gym for residents, featuring high-tech machines and massage chairs in a welcoming timber-clad space with floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s also an adjoining multi-function lounge, which includes reading corners and large sofas. And, for when the weather’s better, there’s an additional rooftop space with a barbecue and loungers.
Things to do in Wan Chai
Location-wise, the neighbourhood has plenty of highlights. The Hopewell Centre is across the road from the property, and Lee Tung Avenue just around the corner. The latter includes loads of upmarket eateries and an entrance to Wan Chai MTR for easy access to the rest of Hong Kong. Meanwhile, trams ply Johnston Road to the north.
I opted for a walk instead, lacing up the sneakers and crossing Queen’s Road East to access the Wan Chai Green Trail from Kennedy Road. A few minutes of puffing and panting later and I was in the middle of a hiker’s paradise. Bowen Road, Black’s Link, Dutch Lane and the Hong Kong Trail were all at my fingertips. I took the opportunity to climb Mount Nicholson for the first time. With the remnants of the typhoon still swirling, let’s just say it was a rather wet walk – but that only made coming back to my warm and spacious suite even more of a treat. (And the washer-dryer came in very handy…)
