Fun gym classes for young children

20 October, 2021 by Expat Living 4 Min Read

https://expatliving.hk/fun-gym-classes-for-young-children/

Keen for your kids to get their bodies moving? My Gym HK offers gymnastics-based development classes for young children, where they can run, jump, climb and tumble in a fun, safe environment. We find out more from CHRISTINE LAU, director at the brand new My Gym centre in Wong Chuk Hang. (And read on for details of the next term of gym classes, beginning late October!)

Fun at My Gym HK

Tell us about your role at My Gym HK.

We have recently relocated from Mid-Levels to Wong Chuk Hang, and I’m the new Director at the WCH centre. The company was established in Hong Kong 18 years ago, and all my kids started going when they were babies. I began as a My Gym parent and now I get to be a part of running it, so it’s been an incredible blessing for me. My kids have gotten so much out of it so I hope to be able to offer this program to more children.

What’s special about gymnastics classes at My Gym?

I think it’s great for their physical development to be able to work on gross and fine motor skills – and also to do it in a social setting where they can meet and interact with other children. I love the different elements it brings in, with the music, dance and puppet shows too. It’s also a great program to nurture parent-child relationships. My Gym is an accompanied program for kids up to 3.5 years old, so it’s an excellent way to spend time and bond with your little ones. And most of all, it’s super fun for the kids!

You mentioned being a My Gym parent; what programmes do your children do and what do they like best about them?

All four of my kids attend My Gym! My oldest is five and he is in the Mighty Mites class, my twins are two years of age and in the Terrific Tots class, and my littlest is a one-year-old and has just started with the Waddlers.

My kids all love the classes – and, first of all, they love the teachers. The teachers are always so energetic, friendly, fun and caring. My twins love them so much that when they play at home, they have role plays where they pretend to be their My Gym teachers! They also enjoy all the different gymnastic skills they learn and how they get to explore the gym floor that’s full of different equipment that’s set up in a different way every week.

Give us an insight into the new venue.

We’ve recently moved into our new location in Wong Chuk Hang and our gym floor is 50% larger than it was before, standing at 2800 square feet. We’ve got all the amazing equipment we had before, as well as a new climbing wall. We’re in a brand new building, Marina 8, that is directly opposite the Wong Chuk Hang MTR and we’re one block down from One Island South.

A word from a parent…

Name: Emily Chan Tan
Children: Tyler (7), Tobey (5) and Teddy (2)

“All three of my boys have been regulars at My Gym. They started classes before they started walking, in Tiny Tykes, and they continued through the various age groups, up to Mighty Mites. My youngest, Teddy, is currently enrolled in Terrific Tots. It’s a place where kids can climb obstacles, ropes and ladders, jump up and down from heights and on a trampoline, hang from a trapeze and find their way out of a maze, all in a safe and supervised environment, and with cheerful and encouraging teachers. They can play on gymnasium equipment and engage in activities designed specifically for their age group and tailored to their developmental stages. They always have fun!

A happy My Gym family!
Tyler, Tobey and Teddy all love their sessions at My Gym

“One of the highlights of My Gym is that the kids receive one-on-one attention from instructors at the activity stations. They’re encouraged to visit each of the stations at least once; they then have the freedom to go back to their favourite activities for another run. There’s also time allocated for free play. Every class finishes with storytelling and songs. After all the running around, it offers the children time to settle down and regain focus to concentrate in a group activity for the remaining 10 minutes.”
