What happens on campus and in the classroom at Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong? Year 2 student Benjamin shares some insights!
Arrival
“Every morning, Year 2 students visit the library before school starts. I meet my friends and sometimes we read or chat – it’s so much fun. The library is really big and has lots of great books. I am reading the Dog Man series by Dav Pilkey. Our librarians recommended I try it – they always help us to choose different books.”
Lessons
“My favourite lesson is PE because we get to do so many different things. I really like the Gymnastics Centre because we get to use all the equipment, but I also like running. When we use the sports hall it’s so much fun because we have obstacle courses and we enjoy competitions with each other. Swimming lessons are sometimes a bit difficult for me but we have them every week and my swim coach is really helpful. He says my technique is improving all the time.”
Outdoor activities
“My favourite outdoor space is the playground. My friends and I sometimes play catch and I am the second fastest. Mr Keeling will always come to the playground every day and talk to us. He knows all of our names and he is nice … but sometimes he can be serious!”
Snack/lunch time
“I eat with my friends in the dining hall but we also see friends from other classes during snack and lunch. We get to line up and the dinner ladies help to give us the food we want, and then we can sit and chat before playtime. My favourite lunch is popcorn chicken and for dessert I always have watermelon because it is so sweet.”
Chinese lesson
“We learn Chinese every day and I get to be with friends from different classes. We also have library lessons in Chinese every week and borrow extra books to take home to read. This year, we celebrated Chinese New Year by visiting the flower market which my mum helped to decorate. It was really beautiful and we could buy CNY gifts.”
Goodbye
“Before I go back home, I often stay after school for extra-curricular activities. I love coding; it’s so much fun. It helps you to think differently and build new programmes.”
What’s next for Benjamin?
“Next year, I’ll move up to Year 3 and will wear a different uniform from Year 2 students – a blue tie and blazer. I might volunteer for the Student Council or Eco Committee as they reflect student voice and often raise money for charity.”
