We hear how Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong is giving its primary students the chance to play an active, caring role to help charity organisations assist those in the community who are facing hardships and challenges. Read on to find out about their community service experience with HandsOn Hong Kong and more.
Why Shrewsbury students enjoy working with charity organisations
In the summer of 2023, Shrewsbury launched a bespoke programme for learning through service that aims to challenge, engage, affect and inspire students in partnership with four regionally based charitable organisations. With the support of Box of Hope, HandsOn Hong Kong, Plastic Free Seas and ImpactHK, students are first introduced to the key challenges facing these charitable groups, before leading action independently.
“I feel enormously proud to be in the position to support an initiative with the scope to positively impact upon the lives of so many children and families and feel deeply appreciative for the support of our charity partners,” says Shrewsbury Principal Ben Keeling. “It’s of the utmost importance that children learn about the lives of those less fortunate and of their own influence in directing change. In this way they will be better equipped to guide and support the solutions of the future.”
Ben adds that while the IBDP has its CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) component for older learners, it is relatively rare for younger students to engage at such depth, often because of perceptions connected to their readiness. As a result, endeavours often lack context. “We wanted to set up a richer and more meaningful programme than is often offered to younger learners. This is because we see how capable they are. We’re keen that they understand the obligation we all share to support those who find themselves in more challenging circumstances.”
This commitment to service can also be seen across the whole school community. For instance, the Shrewsbury Parents Association raised almost HK$10,000 through a silent auction held at a Winter Festival late last year. The proceeds went to the four previously mentioned charity organisations and partners. Hong Kong-based artist and educator Eleanor McColl and Grand Hyatt also offered generous prizes as donations.
A helping hand
More recently, a collaboration with charity organisation HandsOn Hong Kong saw a group of Year 1 students create homemade greeting cards for residents of the United Christian Nethersole Community Service Centre. They were delivered by Year 5 students who spent a lively morning playing board games and visiting the homes of elderly residents.
A word from HandsOn Hong Kong
“During the winter time, our focus on vulnerable individuals and elderly communities is vital, as feelings of loneliness and isolation can be especially challenging. That’s why we were thrilled by the heartwarming efforts of Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong students! We always love seeing how inter-generational connection can bring joy and companionship to everyone involved, and we thank the students for their efforts to make a difference.”
A word from a student
“I enjoyed our visit to the United Christian Nethersole Community Service Centre a great deal. Some senior citizens may face the challenge of loneliness and isolation, but it is good to know that we can make a difference by bringing joy and companionship to them.” – Toby, Year 5
