https://expatliving.hk/best-international-schools-in-hong-kong-preschools-to-secondary/

Finding the best school for your child is really important but there’s a huge range of international schools in Hong Kong. We’ve put together this comprehensive list of 44 of them (including preschools, primary and secondary) to help guide you. For some of the top Hong Kong international schools, we bring you perspectives from teachers or parents, and useful Fact Files. Later on in the article, there’s also a podcast and videos, which we hope will help in your decision-making.

Hong Kong International School List

American School Hong Kong

A teacher’s perspective

Currently in her second year in Hong Kong, American Maggie Farrell is a Grade 5 English Language, Arts and Social Studies teacher at the American School Hong Kong (ASHK).

“I really enjoy the community feeling of ASHK. Everyone knows each other and it’s nice to see friendly faces throughout the school.

I’ve had a lot of memorable moments teaching here. One that stands out to me was a moment from the end of the 2019-2020 school year. The Grade 5 students combined rewards they had earned for positive behaviour to throw pie in the face of the Grade 5 teachers (myself and Ms Cassie)! They pulled together as a team to make it happen and it was a great way to end the year together.”

A word from the school

“Located in Tai Po, ASHK offers a rigorous American education complemented by a wide selection of extra-curricular activities. Class sizes go from 18 in kindergarten to 24 in the higher grades, allowing for more individualised attention. At ASHK, we are dedicated to maximising the creative and innovative capacity of our students, to empower them to meet the goal of our Mission statement to become ‘independent critical thinkers and responsible global citizens who excel in their future studies and careers’.”

What’s new?

“We’ve got a new signature wall with ten photo frames showing our students’ activities. When visitors walk into the school, the wall is something that catches their attention immediately, and the photos show the vitality of ASHK students.”

Canadian International School Hong Kong

A family’s perspective

Canadians Simone, Jerome, Chloe (Grade 9) and Leonardo (Grade 6) have been in Hong Kong for seven years.

“When we asked our children what they liked best about the school, they said the teachers who are willing to help whenever you need it, before and after school, on their lunch break or, more recently, on Zoom. They are supportive and inclusive and don’t make kids feel less smart.

They also said the campus was ‘mind-blowing’ and that it’s an amazing opportunity to go to a school like this. I have one child who is really sporty and another who is very artistic, and CDNIS does more than fulfill their needs with its programmes. They also love that CDNIS is a Green School that practices what it preaches and is continuously looking for ways to reduce its footprint.”

Discovery Bay International School

A family’s perspective

Brits and long-time expats Liz and Trevor have two daughters, Emily and Rachel; 15-year-old Rachel is a student at Discovery Bay International School (DBIS).

“We wanted Rachel to study the British curriculum, and DBIS was an obvious choice. The relatively small class sizes in Primary were a big draw; plus, it’s a through school, which means she can attend right up until she’s ready to go to university.

Rachel loves everything about the school – particularly the welcoming and easy-to-navigate campus. The facilities and educational standards are second to none, yet it hasn’t lost the ‘village school’ ethos it started with so many years ago.

DBIS is committed to each and every child, and the teachers always go above and beyond to support and encourage. Parents can play key roles in the school’s development, with many opportunities to interact with teaching staff, senior leadership and one another.”

What’s new?

“In addition to an exciting expansion of our Creative Arts programme, DBIS is further developing its experiential and outdoor learning opportunities, already well established in our Early Years through the Forest and Beach Schools programme, in all phases of the school with a focus on environmental awareness and community service.”

Hong Kong Academy

A family’s perspective

This American-Swiss family – Patti, Patrick, Ella and Lexi – have returned to Hong Kong after seven years away.

“We chose HKA because it’s a small, not-for-profit IB school. The school community is welcoming, diverse and full of spirit. We love that the school is committed to both the students’ academic and personal development as well as improving the environmental impact on the community via a green school approach.

Both our daughters appreciate the small class size, and the teachers who genuinely care about them as individuals. One of our daughters particularly loves the sports programme while the other is passionate about music and theatre.”

Kellett School

A family’s perspective

Jane (Canadian) and Lars (Norwegian) have three children, Jonathan (Year 11), Theodore (Year 7) and Emmeline (Year 6); all attend Kellett School.

“We wanted a well-balanced education for our children in Hong Kong: strong academics, with opportunities in sports, music and performing arts. Jonathan took an entrance test at Kellett, performed well and was accepted. This gave his siblings a better chance at getting into Reception and Year 1, popular intake years with long waiting lists.

We all had a good feeling on entering the Pok Fu Lam campus. Everyone was kind and knowledgeable, and the students were polite and happy. When Jonny heard about the Year 5 Beijing trip, it sealed the deal!

Kellett’s ability to recruit and retain incredible educators is a core strength. We’ve had several outstanding teachers in the primary years – the type of teachers you would change schools for! We’ve been similarly pleased with the senior school. The children’s favourite things about Kellett are the community, the friends and the nurturing environment, along with the excellent education. What more could you ask for?”

Malvern College Hong Kong

A parent’s perspective

American parent Mrs Shull is mother to pupils in FY2 and Prep 3 at Malvern College Hong Kong.

“We like the combination of UK school traditions with the modern IB curriculum at Malvern College Hong Kong (MCHK). My twelve-year-old enjoys the pastoral care system, which involves having a tutor and a tutor group with pupils from different years. My seven-year-old loves the teachers; they’re very engaging and make learning fun.

The Winter Fair is a highlight of the school year. With fellow mums, I oversaw decorating the school for Christmas in 2019. We created gigantic balloon displays and placed them around the school corridors and doorways. It was wonderful spending time with good friends and bringing Christmas to MCHK. Watching the pupils’ amazement as their school turned into Christmasland was especially gratifying.”

Malvern College Pre-school

A teacher’s perspective

Brit Millie Calkin has been teaching at Malvern College Pre-School for three years.

“I have just entered my fourth academic year teaching at Malvern College Pre-School (MCPS). We are a Reggio-inspired preschool, and high levels of dedication and time are spent creating an excellent teaching and learning environment for children from Pre-Nursery to K2. We follow the children’s interests using ‘In the Moment Planning’, and we develop exciting projects where children’s interests are valued, followed and explored. In April 2019, MCPS organised a teacher study group to attend the Reggio Emilia Study Tour in Italy. Mount Kelly Hong Kong

A teacher’s perspective

“I’ve been teaching at Mount Kelly since the very first day it opened in September 2017. There have definitely been plenty of memorable moments over the years. At the House Singing Competition it was fantastic to see the children work together in their houses from Year 1 all the way to the Year 8. Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong

A parent’s perspective

Mrs Beatty is a mother of two students at Nord Anglia International School (NAIS) and a proud member of the school’s community since 2016.

“We looked long and hard for a school for our children, and we made our choice based on the teachers, the teaching methods and the learning environment. We have found the teachers at NAIS to be exceptional. They put their pupils first and treat them as individuals while their methods have ensured that our kids are excited to learn every day. The result is an engaging environment that is still fun, and our children love their classrooms, themes and subjects.

Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong

A family’s perspective

Agustin and Marie, along with their two children, have been in Hong Kong for five years.

“There are many factors that contributed to us choosing Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong for our son Sebastian. The ones that stood out at the time were the school’s focus on primary education, the faculty, and the leadership staff.

The idea that our son would be going to a school 100 percent committed to his early development made him (and us) feel a sense of belonging that we didn’t get from other places.

We also had the opportunity to meet with some of the Early Years teachers who seemed particularly caring, while speaking with such confidence and expertise that we were moved to immediately trust them with our child. Being an expat family, we’ve moved around the world our fair share and have experienced several different schools. I’ve never encountered one that has made us feel more ‘important’ – not in the social sense, of course, but in terms of peace of mind; knowing that Sebastian (like all his schoolmates) are first and foremost the priority in all decision-making.”

Stamford American School Hong Kong

A teacher’s perspective

American expat Ms Perez is a founding member of the Stamford American School Hong Kong faculty and a Grade 1 Homeroom teacher at the school.

“I particularly enjoy the sense of community we have at school. Creating a community that focuses on a culture of care has been a priority since our school opened; students come to school knowing it’s like a second home, where they’ll be encouraged, celebrated and cared for. We all take pride in being a part of the Stamford family.

The last day of the 2019-2020 school year was especially memorable for me. There had obviously been challenging times throughout the year, and the Stamford team came together to ensure our students’ needs were met regardless. We all learned that we are capable of much more than we think. On the last day, staff and students wore our blue #StamfordStrong t-shirts, representing that we met the challenges, rose to the occasion and came out on top. It was an exciting send-off and a genuine representation of care, teamwork and community.”
