Where to watch the Rugby Sevens

8 April, 2019 by Rebecca Simpson 3 Min Read

https://expatliving.hk/where-to-watch-the-hong-kong-sevens/

It’s one of the city’s biggest events but tickets to the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens can be hard to come by. That doesn’t mean, however, that you need to miss out on the fun! Organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Union, the Sevens will be held from 5 to 7 April this year with 120,000 visitors expected to attend, and there are always plenty of parties and satellite events around town. Here’s a selection of some of the highlights.

Gwen Stefani’s one-off Hong Kong Sevens Show

Three-time Grammy Award-winner and global icon Gwen Stefani will perform a one-off show at Hong Kong’s Central Harbourfront event space on Friday, 5 April. The concert will kick off the 2019 Cathay Pacific/ HSBC Hong Kong Sevens Festival, sponsored by Marriott Bonvoy, running over the three days of this year’s tournament (5-7 April).

5 April | Central Harbourfront | HK$780 | Get tickets here

No tickets? No worries. Head to Sevens Central

If you haven’t managed to get a stadium ticket for the Hong Kong Sevens this year, you can still enjoy all the atmosphere of the tournament at Sevens Central. Following Gwen Stefani’s opening concert on Friday, 5 April, Central Harbourfront will transform into a Sevens fanzone for the weekend (open Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April from 12pm to 8pm). Featuring rugby on the big screen, live music and entertainment and happy hour drinks all day, you can take advantage of all the Sevens fun in the city. And admission is free!

Expect some first-class street performers, giveaways and a few surprises, including tribute acts performing numbers by Pink, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, Queen and more!

Play at Sevens Festival in Causeway Bay

The Hong Kong Sevens Festival down at Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay is a great alternative for families. This year, there’ll be a heap of family fun on offer. Get the kids to burn off all that energy on the state-of-the-art ninja warrior course, watch some street performers, and of course the rugby matches are played on the big screens.

5-7 April | 11.30am-7pm | Lee Gardens Causeway Bay

Eat at Sevens Food Festival

Playing rugby makes you hungry, and so does watching rugby! If you’re hungry, head on down to Lee Gardens Area where the Sevens Festival will be on from 23 March to 7 April, 2019. Lee Gardens Area will host a street party over the Sevens weekend. The Fan Walk will have a live broadcast of matches and you’ll find a bounty of food delights starting at just HK$7. Over 15 bars and restaurants will participate in the Sevens Food Festival including An Nam Vietnamese Restaurant, Brick Lane, Lee Fa Yuen, Reserva Ibérica and a bunch more.

The Official Hong Kong Sevens Rugby After Party

If you survive the weekend, there’s also the after-party. Organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Union and Lan Kwai Fong Association, the Official Hong Kong Sevens Rugby After Party is always worth being part of. It kicks off around 8pm in Lan Kwai Fong and goes until late, with booth games, official photo ops, beer and street food. Last year, they even had a parade.

5 April | 8-11pm | Lan Kwai Fong
