Tina’s Sustainable Sparklers

25 March, 2019 by Aoife Mackenzie 3 Min Read

Precious and semi-precious stones are at the centre of this sustainable jewellery brand that has both heart and soul. Learn why Tina Jansen’s Finnly’s Fine Jewellery is a good place to start looking for that special gift, or a little treat for yourself.

Tina’s background is as interesting and diverse as her brand. Born in Germany, she grew up in the Italian part of Switzerland, the child of a successful entrepreneur. Catching the business bug at a young age, she went on to study in Zurich and build a successful career in public relations and marketing, working in a variety of industries internationally and living in Germany, America, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.

It was during her time in “gemstone paradise” Sri Lanka that Tina decided to study gemology in Colombo, while simultaneously building her personal collection of gemstones. Her aesthetic eye, artistic spirit and business acumen culminated in the creation of Finnly’s, a luxury jewellery brand with a whimsical twist. “It was just a matter of time. Having the famous Sri Lankan gem mines on my doorstep, I was always able to find exactly what I was looking for,” Tina says.

Using a combination of precious and semi-precious stones from Sri Lankan mines, Finnly’s feel-good designs are inspired by Tina’s travels, and her appreciation of fashion and nature. The chic and contemporary designs range from casual to sophisticated. “They’re made for the modern woman and inspired by vivacious memories of Mediterranean summers,” says Tina.

Personal touch

When it comes to design, Tina takes what she calls a “playful” approach. “I often spread loose gemstones out in front of me and experiment with different cuts and colours, until I have found the perfect combination.”

Only natural, untreated GIC (Gemological Institute of Colombo) certified gems are selected for inclusion in each collection, and Tina personally sources and selects all the stones to ensure their quality. “I love the whole process; from choosing the perfect stone to creating a beautiful design and then seeing the final product,” she says. Each piece is handmade and, if you prefer something custom to add to your jewellery collection, Finnly’s can craft something bespoke, tailored to your specific requirements.

Another priority for the jeweller is upholding ethical values and sustainable production. “It’s all about giving back to the community and the country where these stunning gems come from,” says Tina. So, she’s committed to contributing the many facets of her expertise to various Sri Lankan institutions; proceeds from Finnly’s sales go to different charities, supporting underprivileged children, education and female empowerment throughout the country.

Finally, what’s Tina’s top tip for building a collection of gemstone jewellery? It’s much like her own personal ethos: “Be passionate and follow your heart.”
