CHARLOTTE is in her first year of Secondary School at Stamford American School Hong Kong. Here she reflects on her time as an elementary student (Pre-Primary to Grade 5). She also tells us about some of her achievements through the American education system, and how her teachers help her pursue her passions.
When did you start at Stamford American School, and what do you enjoy about it?
I’ve been here for three years – before that, I was at a local school in Hong Kong. I really love the learning at Stamford because it’s always happy; all the teachers are very encouraging. Of course, I was very shy at the beginning of my first year, in Grade 3, but our teacher helped us to express more ideas and share more thoughts. We have a lot of class discussion, presentation and debating, so I really love learning here.
What is a Stamford value that you think you resonate most with?
I would say the courage value. We have so many opportunities to showcase ourselves. Last year, I participated in the Stamford’s Got Talent show, playing the piano in front of an audience – everyone clapped for me, which was amazing and memorable.
Also, in Grade 4 I went rock climbing and I reached the top of the wall that was 80 metres high. At first I didn’t think I could do it, but I was really happy to succeed in this challenge and to be a risk-taker.
What’s your favourite sport?
I’m passionate about taekwondo – I’ve learnt it since I was five. Last year, I finally got my black belt. It was really hard and a long path to achieve this, but I’m really proud of myself. I want to represent Stamford at the interschools taekwondo competition and be the champion! My goal is to join the Hong Kong team – I’m working hard on it.
Tell us about one of your teachers.
Ms Schultz is my homeroom teacher and she is really supportive and encouraging. She lets me follow my passion, and every time I have to excuse myself from lessons for competitions she always cheers for me in front of the class. She’s also very patient and listens to me whenever I have any problems; I really trust her and she’s just like my friend.
Are you looking forward to secondary school?
I imagine in secondary school we will have to be more independent and do more critical thinking and self learning. There are more subjects to do, too, and we have to go to different classrooms ourselves. Ms Schultz has already told us about it, so I’m really excited and definitely ready to become a secondary student at Stamford.
