Let’s face it – not all of us are comfortable with going barefaced at the beach. The solution? Waterproof cosmetics. They contain special ingredients that preserve makeup, keeping it from sliding off your face when your skin gets wet. This month, Kelly Bilimoria runs us through the best waterproof makeup options.
Foundation and Concealer
Most waterproof foundations don’t include SPF protection, so it’s necessary to first use a primer with SPF. It’s also a good idea to invest in a trusted product rather than a cheaper version claiming to be waterproof! To apply waterproof foundation and concealer, place a liberal amount on your face, blend it well, and let it set before hitting the pool or beach.
Kelly recommends:
Primer: Make Up For Ever UV Prime SPF 50
Foundation: MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation – Creamy, waterproof and with SPF 15, so your face not only looks flawless but is protected.
Concealer: Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Waterproof Concealer – A waterproof and full-coverage vitamin-infused concealer. Build up the coverage in layers to hide any imperfections, blemishes or dark circles with ease.
Mascara
Waterproof mascara is nothing new, but advances in technology have made it better than ever for girls who like to swim.
Kelly recommends:
L’Oréal Voluminous Waterproof Mascara – Thickens eyelashes by up to four times, and holds even while you take a dip.
Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara – Lengthens, thickens and curls while withstanding any wet conditions or humidity. As well as the usual black and brown, you can pick it up a fun blue.
Eye Shadow
For eye makeup by the pool, a little goes a long way.
Kelly recommends:
Benefit She Laq – A clear liquid waterproofing concoction that converts non-waterproof eye colour into waterproof.
Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream – Highly pigmented, what’s most cool about this product is that it can act as a highlighter, blush or lip colour, as it is made to be safe for both eyes and lips.
Lipstick
Keep your lips looking luscious while you are kicking back in the pool with these waterproof choices.
Kelly recommends:
Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge – 100-percent waterproof in a variety of colours to suit your beach look.
Benefit’s Benetint is a product that can be worn not only as a highlight or blush, but also as a lip colour. It also smells delicious!
Hints and Tips
- If you wear makeup while swimming, don’t rub your face with a towel when drying off.
- After water exposure, pat your face gently so you don’t smear your makeup. Another option is to use a blotting paper to absorb excess moisture.
- In need of a serious touch-up at the pool or beach? Remove the old makeup and reapply.
