Shopping for bronzers: How to get that superstar glow with makeup

Want to achieve that A-list glow with no embarrassing streaky patches? Kelly Bilimoria, pro makeup artist, tells us how.

Be on your way to a glowing complexion like Jennifer Lopez

DON’T choose colours that are too orange or too dark. Pick a bronzer just one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone.

DO choose a slightly warmer shade of foundation if you’re applying it before the bronzer. This will even out the tan.

DO choose a formulation that is right for your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin or you’re acne-prone, it’s best not to select a cream bronzer.

DON’T forget to apply with a brush to give a smoother and more even finish. Try MAC Brush 187 or Laura Mercier Bronzing Brush.

DO try a matte powder instead of shimmering bronzer for the forehead, nose and chin. Save sparkle for cheeks.

DON’T just bronze your face! Always blend into your neck and hairline for a natural look.

DO wear blush over your bronzer to add dimension – soft pinks or apricot shades work well and add a glow.

Apply like a pro

  • For a sun-kissed look, apply bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your cheekbones, nose, centre of forehead and chin.
  • If you want to look tanned all over, dust bronzer all over your face, but do so with a light hand.
  • Always create the number “3” on both sides of your face with your brush. Start at the top of the forehead, dust it along the cheeks and then sweep it across your jawline all the way to the chin. This also slims down the face.
