QUICKIE

Boiling eggs

You want to boil eggs for exactly 9 minutes but you only have a 4-minute hourglass timer and a 7-minute hourglass timer – and no watch! How can you use the two timers to cook the eggs for exactly 9 minutes?

Answer: Put the eggs on to boil and turn the two hourglass timers. When the 4-minute timer is empty, start it again. Then, when the 7-minute timer is empty, start it again. When the 4-minute timer runs out for a second time, the 7-minute timer will have been running for just 1 minute on its second cycle; so just turn the 7-minute timer again and let the 1 minute’s worth of sand run out, then take your eggs off the boil, as they will have cooked for 9 minutes. (Two lots of the 4-minute timer, plus an extra minute.
