How to find the right mattress for you

30 August, 2018 by Expat Living 3 Min Read

https://expatliving.hk/natural-latex-mattress-hong-kong-okooko-european-bedding/

Is there anything more relaxing than sinking into a mattress that is the perfect combination of support and luxury? Your mattress is key to achieving that elusive perfect night’s sleep and waking refreshed. Here Okooko by European Bedding’s Thijs Veyfeyken shares his tips on how to find the right mattress.

Thijs says there are four main types of mattress construction in the market: springs (generally pocket springs); memory foam; natural latex; and PU foams. So, which is the best for you? “Budget will always come into play at the outset. There is an old adage: ‘Spend money on shoes and your mattress, because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other’,” he says. “This is so true. Unfortunately, many people, especially in Hong Kong, spend on their shoes and compromise on their mattress!  All of the aforementioned mattress types have pros and cons, but there are a few key things to look for when making a choice that will ensure sure you get a great night’s sleep.”

European Bedding's Thijs Veyfeyken gives his advice on choosing a mattress

1 Natural materials

Many beds and bedding materials available today are derived from petrochemicals and made using toxic or carcinogenic chemical processes. And because sleep is an active process, every movement compresses these materials and releases toxic fumes into the air. It makes sense to sleep with pure and natural fibres surrounding you that will aid your breathing and maintain your body temperature, and that aren’t full of unnecessary chemical treatments. It is sleep the way nature intended. Okooko by European Bedding mattresses are designed to maximise airflow around the mattress. This feature eliminates moisture retention, dust mites, bacteria and fungi. This is a benefit appreciated by everyone, but in particular those who are prone to allergies or asthma. Our Heveya-mattresses are made from 100% Natural Organic Latex to give you a natural and healthier night’s sleep.

2 Specific fit

We are all unique shapes and sizes, and we all have our own sleeping preferences. Your bed should also be personalised to fit your body. Okooko’s mattresses come in different densities, ranging from soft-medium to firm. What’s more is that even within one Queen or King size, they can customize to include two densities, fitted and tuned to each partner’s unique to both partners so they get an energising and renewing night’s sleep, every night.

3 Good support

Okooko’s mattresses are made out of 100% Natural Organic Latex, providing the right balance between support and comfort. Comfort is a personal preference but most people prefer a nice, soft feeling at the beginning, followed by an upward force that supports the body as it sinks deeper in the mattress. Sleep institutions have developed a “Comfort Index” to determine the ideal sleeping comfort; latex scores much better than springs, which become very hard when pushed deeply, and foam, which “breaks” at a certain moment. The “perfect” mattress is one that adapts perfectly to the contours of your body and gives you support, so you sleep with a straight back. When on your back it should push into your lower back, and when on your side it should let your shoulder and hip sink sufficiently so your spine is always in a neutral position. What’s more is that latex is more durable than other materials and more safe. Latex is naturally anti-mould, anti-dustmite and anti-allergy. We also don’t use any glues in our mattresses, which results in sleeping “hot”. All mattresses come with a removable cover that can be washed for extra hygiene.
