‘Our favourite parties are where kids have an absolute blast’

Rumple and Friends has come a long way since its inception in 2012 when it was just one man and a suitcase travelling around Hong Kong providing entertainment at kids’ parties.

The company has grown to have its own studio, full-time staff and a small army of freelancers who perform magic shows, face-painting, balloon shows and other bespoke events. Last year alone, Rumple and Friends performed at 600 parties and events in Hong Kong, including the Clockenflap Festival.

Matt Coombes – the original Rumple – is director of the company, which provides a wide range of high-quality, professional entertainment to children for birthday parties, private events and corporate family fun days. “Rumple and Friends’ mission is to bring happiness, joy and magic to the children of Hong Kong through birthday parties, school shows, discos, and projects ranging from a few days to a whole year through drama, our unique performances or specially tailored events,” Matt says. “We honestly try to make each and every party hugely fun and energetic.”

Keeping up with the kids

When it comes to what’s big right now with little guests, Matt says superhero and mermaid parties are popular. There’s huge demand for both their male and female super heroes and Melody Mermaid performers. For older children, he says disco parties are frequently requested. “These parties come with a full, professional mobile disco setup, loads of fun costumes and props for the children to enjoy, as well as a full two-hour rundown of party games,” he says.

Rumple and Friends aims to provide a comprehensive service to take the stress out of holding kids’ parties. “Booking a party couldn’t be simpler,” Matt says. “Visit our website to see our 13 unique characters, choose a character to perform a fun magic show and play themed games. Send us a message with your date, time and location of your party, and we’ll book in one of our performers.”

He advises booking for kids’ parties four to six weeks in advance. He says Rumple and Friends can sort out everything from entertainers to venues and decorations through its partner companies if needed. “Our expertise goes beyond party entertainment to event management,” he says. “It’s important that things flow nicely with any entertainment, from meal times and cutting the cake to playing games, a piñata, as well as making use of any extras that may have been hired, like a bouncy castle. We’re always very careful to work around these elements to maximise the fun for the kids. Our favourite parties are simply parties where the children have an absolute blast and enjoy themselves as much as possible while we’re there!”
