Hong Kong’s Best Bars

We love the nightlife here in Hong Kong, but with so many bars to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. Here’s our guide to some of the best, whatever the occasion.

Best for alfresco drinking:

Aberdeen Street Social

While Hong Kong is home to many an alfresco bar, there aren’t any quite as convenient as Aberdeen Street Social, situated slap-bang in the middle of Sheung Wan and Central. With a large outdoor area on the ground floor and a more formal outdoor balcony on top, their British-inspired cocktail menu with creative twists consistently earns them the title of one of the city’s best cocktail bars.

Best happy hour:

Happy Hours in Hong Kong are huge but we head to Oolaa more often than not, mostly due to the Super Happy Hour, where drinks start at $40 and there is a free tapas bar buffet for all. Oh, and ladies: on Wednesdays it’s free Prosecco for you from 5 to 7pm!

Best for weekends:

The Pontiac

Hidden among the swanky bars and five-star hotels is this laid-back underground style jaunt inspired by bars found in Portland, Brooklyn and San Francisco. The jukebox is one of the many charms and the staff are regularly compared to the Coyote Ugly girls. Come here if you want to party and dance the night away.

Best live music:

Peel Fresco

We admit, Hong Kong is lacking in a variety of live music venues; however, Peel Fresco saves us every time with its live jazz, blues, rock and open-mic nights. Be sure to check the website as the schedule changes all the time.

For special occasions:

Ozone Bar

Savour a drink amidst the clouds at Ozone, a sky bar and lounge located atop The Ritz-Carlton, that also holds the title as the highest bar in the world. If you can stomach the dizzying heights of 118 floors this is certainly a place to celebrate.

Best beach bar:

Yes, we do have beach bars in Hong Kong, and they’re every bit as good as ones in the tropics. Limewood in Repulse Bay fulfils all your beach dreams with cocktails, beers and snacks, all just a moment away from the white sand.

Best hidden spot:

Feather Boa

A local secret, this bar has seen the start (and end!) of many good nights. Find the green doors with the curtains, knock and wait patiently for a member of staff to let you in. Once inside, comfy sofas and bar stools await, along with the best chocolate-covered strawberry daiquiri in town!

Best rooftop bar:

Seafood Room

One of the newest and most talked about rooftop bars in Hong Kong due to its sheer size (it has two rooftops and plenty of outside seating), comfort and undisturbed views from 26 floors above Causeway Bay, this is without a doubt the best bar to watch the fireworks and light show.

Best to take visitors:

Ping Pong

Visitors are usually on the lookout for somewhere not too crowded, a big enough area to sit, a great drinks list and a cool atmosphere. Ping Pong has this plus more. Head here and wow your friends with huge gin and tonics in a secretive location.
