Hong Kong property market update, December 2013: Hot properties to rent and buy

We’ve mentioned the new cooling measures many times in this column and will continue as long as it’s a hot topic, says Letizia Casalino from Hong Kong Sotheby’s International Realty. Many of our clients ask us about the effect these measures have had and whether it’s still a good idea to invest. Depending on each client’s needs and background, everyone deserves a different answer.

The cooling measures have now been in place for a year and the numbers have been released. In 2012, the property market rose 20 percent and in 2013 the curb was much shyer which clearly demonstrates the desired effect has been achieved. This said, buying a property in Hong Kong is still possible with the right advice.

The rental market, on the other hand, is showing less of a difference year on year. Demand is still high with new arrivals relocating to Hong Kong on a weekly basis. Domestic moves also remain significant, especially at the beginning of a new year. The trend to make a move to a new home is exciting for both the rental market and tenants alike.
