Inside a renowned French preschool

28 September, 2020 by Expat Living 3 Min Read

Good news for little learners! The largest private French and international preschool in Hong Kong is now admitting students for 2020/21. Here are five key things to know about Les Petits Lascars.

#1 Backstory

The school was created in 2006 by Christian and Dominique Chasset at the request of French parents in Hong Kong. The Chassets are not just qualified and decorated French teachers, they’ve also been living in Hong Kong for 35 years, and are the founders of the well-known language school the Hong Kong Institute of Languages, located in Central, and the Hong Kong Kids Academy.

Les Petits Lascars is operated by the Hong Kong Kids Academy and offers preschool education for ages nine months to six years, either in French, in line with the French National Education system, or in bilingual (French/ English) or trilingual (French/English/Mandarin) options. The school also provides an international stream, with progression to the International Baccalaureate.

#2 Location

Les Petits Lascars operates three schools: Central (in the heart of the CBD, two minutes from the MTR), Tseung Kwan O (in front of the Lycée Français) and Southside (across from Wong Chuk Hang MTR). All are easily accessible by public transport, while a school bus service (including a “bus nanny”) is also available.

#3 Qualified Staff

The education team at Les Petits Lascars is led by a certified Principal of the French International Education System (AEFE) and made up of qualified and experienced teachers.

#4 Philosophy

Mrs Chasset says: “We believe in a caring environment, centred around the wellbeing of your children, with an approach that adapts to every child’s learning pattern, uniqueness and individual learning needs. Our primary mission is to motivate your child to want to go to school to learn and assert and develop his/her own personality.”

Of course, language learning is also at the heart of the preschool’s approach. “We strongly believe that bilingualism is a major asset for children,” says Mrs Chasset. “Language acquisition is acheived through immersion and is an integral part of your child’s learning process.”

#5 Name

We like the preschool’s fun name – Les Petits Lascars translates as “The Little Rascals”!

About the programmes

Playgroups/Baby Gym (9-24 months)

Play-based, sensory and stimulating learning activities that allow children to explore the five senses and the environment around them, building their confidence and self-confidence.

Pre-Nursery/TPS (2-3 years)

A playful and caring teaching approach, centred on socialisation, and designed to stimulate language, sensory, motor and cognitive development.

K1 – K3/PS – GS (3-6 years)

K1 is compulsory from the age of three in the French system, and this programme is designed to develop the desire, enjoyment and reward of learning.

FLAM (3-12 years)

These mother tongue support classes are aimed at French-speaking children in local or international schools; they’re generally taught in small groups one to three times a week.

Classes operate on the model of the French school year, from September to June.
