A Cosmopolitan Symphony – HKCO Season Opening Concert [Buy 1, get 1 free!]
27 September @ 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra has been invited to perform in the Opening Ceremony of ‘Festival Hong Kong 2019 – A Cultural Extravaganza@Shanghai’, which will be held in Shanghai this coming November. As a special treat to Hong Kong audiences, the HKCO will give a pre-tour performance of the programme selection at the season opening concert.
Pieces range from ancient tunes like ‘Song of the General; Follow the Pagoda Tree to Trace the Roots of Our Ancestors’ by internationally renowned composer Zhao Jiping, to golden oldies from film and television series. The latter will include a medley made up of household tunes such as ‘Love Lingers On’, along with recent compositions by two talented Hong Kong composers, ‘Big Tree’, for eco-huqin and orchestra, by Ng Cheuk-yin, and ‘The Orchid Pavilion’ by Ng King-pan. The ‘tree’, as the subject of the former, carries a rich meaning pertaining to the historic changes in Hong Kong, a city that has felt both highs and lows yet still grows strong and flourishes. The latter is inspired by the famous piece of calligraphy by Wang Xizhi (303-361) of the Jin Dynasty entitled ‘Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Anthology’. The composer aims to express the concept of ‘rectitude’ associated with the running script style of calligraphy through his music.
