Art Futures Group X Art Futures Gallery – Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition: Pan De Hai Exhibition
23 March @ 10:00 am - 8 April @ 10:00 pm
Spearheading the promotion of Chinese contemporary art since its inception, Art Futures Group (AFG) has been actively scouting and grooming gifted talent in the field with a view to raising awareness of their works. Following last year’s ”Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition” which introduced works by the Shanghai-based artists Ann Niu and Qiu Shengxian, AFG joins Art Futures Gallery to present the 2018 edition, featuring 12 artworks by Pan De Hai on 1/F, Water Zone at ELEMENTS.
Prominently presented in the exhibition is Pan’s latest series Childhood, a vivid recollection of nostalgic anecdotes in the 1960s and 70s in China depicted with the artist’s iconic brushstroke. A flagbearer of art as a relevant part of everyday life, the AFG team has curated a selection of previously unseen works for visitors to gain a thorough understanding of the social transformation in China over the past few decades through an intimate dialogue with art.
Famous for depicting the ‘Corn Men’ in his early creations, Pan recently focuses on the comical portrayal of an obese character, which stands out as a significant visual element of his works with a philosophical connotation. “I’d like to delve into the issue of obesity, a pervasive by-product of modernisation in society nowadays. It is an aggressive and enduring symptom of the epidemic of urbanism, a vibrant allegory of excessive greed that looms large in our time,” he comments.
