Dessert Recipe: South African Malva Pudding

Looking for a new dessert recipe to add to your repertoire? Here’s one for a South African baked dessert, Malva Pudding, sent in by reader Georgia Bisset. Happy cooking and eating!

Dessert recipe - Malva Pudding
Malva Pudding

Malva Pudding Recipe

Ingredients for pudding

  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon apricot jam
  • 1 egg
  • teaspoon baking powder

Ingredients for sauce

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 2 cups milk
  • 125g butter
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions for pudding

  1. 1. Beat egg and sugar.
  2. Add jam and dry ingredients.
  3. Add milk and bicarbonate of soda.
  4. Bake at 180°C for 45 minutes.

Instructions for sauce

  1. Mix all ingredients in a pan over the stove.
  2. Allow to boil for three minutes.
  3. Pour sauce over baked pudding.
  4. Cover with lid and allow to steam before serving.
