Bar Talk: Wooloomooloo Prime, Causeway Bay

We scour the Hong Kong bar scene to bring you the new and the noteworthy. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it! This month, Online Editor Sarah heads to Causeway Bay and discovers one of the best rooftop bars in the city; Wooloomooloo Prime.

Where to drink in Hong Kong
Talk about drink with a view!

First Impression

It is hard not to be immediately impressed as soon as you enter Wooloomooloo. While the decor is spectacular in itself, the outdoor rooftop terrace is the main object that attracts the eye. With a selection of bar stools and dining tables and chairs, where ever you chose to sit you will be looking out onto one of the best views in Causeway Bay. Stretching out onto Victoria Harbour, on a clear day you can see all the way to New Territories and beyond. The highlight of the view however, has to be during the evening, or more precisely 8pm, when the light show starts, and you have front row seats. As first impressions go, this is a pretty good one.

The Chosen One

There’s something about rooftop terraces that make you reach straight for the cocktail menu, and then realise that only one cocktail just won’t do. Luckily for me I had 2  willing volunteers that were happy to order more than one also. Between the 3 of us, we found a clear favourite in the ‘Burning Passion’ ($178) A martini of flamed fresh passion fruit, passion fruit liqueur and vanilla infused vodka enlivened with a shot of champagne.

The Cheapskate

If your purse strings are feeling tight head for the liquor menu where vodkas, gins, rums and whiskeys start at $80. However, I do think this bar is all about the cocktails and the view so I would recommend the Chilean Pisco Sour  ($115) which contains Alto del Carmen barrel aged pisco, shaken with freshly squeezed lemon juice and sugar syrup then topped with Angostura aromatic bitters.

Bite on this

The restaurant serves the mouth-watering 150-day Australian Black Angus as its signature beef while other selected cuts ranging from a 12oz USDA prime beef to a generous 40oz Australian Tomahawk steak are also available. If you fancy something a bit lighter during evening drinks go for ‘A Little Taste of The Mediterranean’ ($145) which is Burrata mozzarella, served with slow roasted tomato & basil, fire roasted bell peppers & sunflower seeds in garlic oil & Iberico chorizo.

Last but not least

From Tuesday to Sunday, 8pm onwards, their resident 6-piece band ‘X-Five’ play live under the stars, providing you with up beat modern and classic tunes all night long! For a popular chain with a large rooftop terrace, prices are a lot more reasonable than you would have thought. Cocktails are great and the live band really makes it a unique place to be in the evenings. The group also have restaurants in TST, Wan Chai and also Singapore.
