Malvern College Pre-School (MCPS) has been celebrating its fifth birthday this year at Coronation Circle; the pretty preschool campus in West Kowloon welcomed its first pupils in August 2017, and was followed by the opening of a second preschool campus, Island West, in Sai Ying Pun in August 2019. Next year, Malvern College Hong Kong (MCHK) will join the party with its own five-year anniversary. To mark the occasion, here’s a look at five achievements of the IB World school since its launch, including accreditation for the IB Diploma, MYP and PYP programmes.
#1 MCHK’s full IB accreditation
Only two years after opening, MCHK became an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School; it was granted the Certificate of Authorization to offer all three IB Programmes, the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). What’s more, all three accreditations for the IB programmes came through in the same academic year.
#2 Completion of year groups
MCHK opened in August 2018, with an initial enrolment of 400 pupils; this increased to 900 in 2021/22 and will reach approximately 1,000 in 2022/23. Classes are now operating from Prep 1 (Y1) to Lower Sixth (Y12); and with the addition of Upper Sixth (Y13) in 2022/23, the school’s year groups will finally be complete. The pupil body continues to grow too, and at full capacity – enrolment numbers have reached approximately 1,200 across all year groups.
#3 First year to graduate with the IB Diploma (May 2023)
Next year will see the very first MCHK Sixth Form cohort sit the IB diploma and move on to university. Currently, the Lower Sixth pupils are engaged in making initial decisions as to their university choices, with some great offers expected from some of the top universities around the world.
#4 Adoption of an all-through model
Aiming to provide a clear and progressive pathway from preschool to primary and secondary education – and ultimately to graduation – MCHK will become an all-through school from the 2023-24 school year. All pupils graduating from K2 in MCPS will be guaranteed a place in Prep 1 at MCHK if they are suitable for a mainstream, English-medium education.
Founding Headmaster DR ROBIN A LISTER says the change will provide more cohesion between the two schools. “It will emphasise our shared values and approach to teaching, and provide parents (and children) a straightforward and stress-free transition; it also promotes the idea of a unique Malvern identity that transcends any individual school and incorporates a global vision stretching from Hong Kong to Chengdu, Qingdao, Tokyo, Egypt, Switzerland and, of course, the UK.”
#5 New facilities to open
A new sixth-floor development at MCHK will see the provision of more classrooms, a Sixth Form centre, an examination hall and other offices. This should be ready for August 2022. Also new for the College is a Black Box Theatre, which is being built to add to the Drama department (again, with a likely opening in August), and an additional large outdoor play area next to the MCHK campus.
